• Diablo requires a Power Macintosh (or compatible).
• Diablo has a minimum requirement of System 7.5 or greater. We strongly recommend using System 7.5.5 or higher.
• Diablo requires 16 megabytes of total memory for a single player game. If you only have 16 megabytes of RAM, you will need to turn on Virtual Memory. We recommend setting VM so your system’s Largest Unused block reports at least 22 megabytes free.
• Diablo requires 32 megabytes of total memory for a multiplayer game.
• Diablo requires a color display with a minimum resolution of 640x480 and 256 colors.
• Diablo requires Open Transport 1.1.1 or higher for AppleTalk or Battle.net multiplayer games
To install the Diablo demo, run the Diablo Demo Installer. First, it will show you this read me file. We recommend that you take the short amount of time it will take to read :-) Then you will be shown a screen from which you can choose what to install. The options:
Diablo Demo: This will install the Diablo demo (or spawn) version to a folder of your choice.
If your Macintosh has an earlier system version than System 7.5.5, the installer will notify you that we recommend using System 7.5.5 or higher, you can find the appropriate updates at Apple’s web site. <http://www.apple.com>
If your Macintosh has a version of Open Transport earlier than OT 1.1.1, then the installer will notify you that OT 1.1.1 or higher is required to play Battle.net or AppleTalk multiplayer games. Apple’s OpenTransport 1.1.1 is available at the Apple web site. <http://www.apple.com>

Using Architecture as a Tactical Position
There are many places in the labyrinth that the character can use to his advantage when in combat. Two basic examples of these are barrels and doorways.
Barrels not only are sources of hidden treasures, but they also provide excellent blocking terrain for ranged attacks. Since barrels can have spells or arrows fired over them, a sorcerer or rogue properly positioned behind a cluster of barrels can hold back a large group of oncoming creatures.
Doorways can also be used very effectively for singling out monsters when encountered in large groups. If you are swarmed by a large group of creatures in the labyrinth, an excellent tactic is to position your character just on the other side of a doorway and take them on one at a time as they enter the doorway.
There are numerous other areas within the labyrinth that can be used as strong tactical positions by players who are looking for them. Keep your eyes open and your weapons ready!
Resistance and Immunity
Certain monsters in the labyrinth are resistant or even immune to different types of magic. After killing several monsters of the same type, your character will learn the resistances and immunities that these creatures have. Unique creatures (those whose names are displayed in gold text) may also have resistances or immunities. While your character does not know the immunities or resistances of a unique monster, he will know if some type of immunity or resistance exists.
For example, should you have difficulty killing a unique monster with an attack such as firebolt, the creature may have a resistance or immunity to fire based attacks. Try using an electrical (lightning) or magical (stone curse) attack instead.
I Love This Game, But It’s A Little Too Tough…
Depending on the items you find, spells you learn and creatures you encounter, each game will play very differently - even with characters of the same class. Because of the randomness of Diablo, some labyrinths will be more challenging than others. Until you are an expert spelunker, you may find a dungeon too difficult. If this is the case, you can use the “New Game” option to take your character (complete with stats, experience, and inventory) into a new labyrinth where you can fortify him with additional gold, items, spells, and experience from earlier levels.
The Mac Diablo Demo, can only play against other Mac Diablo Demo’s. It cannot play against the Win95 Demo, it cannot play against the Win95 full game, it cannot play against the Mac full game. Games created by the demo will not be visible to the either the Win95 or Mac full Diablo, or the Win95 Diablo Demo
Please note that the retail version of Mac Diablo is fully capable of playing against the retail Win95 Diablo
Diablo and Battle.net
Battle.net is an Internet gaming service provided by Blizzard Entertainment which allows players to meet up, challenge other players, and join games, all without paying any special connection charges.
In order to use Battle.net, your computer must have OpenTransport v1.1.1 or higher, and an internet connection, either over OT/PPP or a LAN.
“I click on Battle.net, but nothing seems to happen.”
Sometimes your Mac may not be able to connect to your ISP while Diablo is running. Try making the PPP connection to your ISP before starting Diablo.
If you have successfully connected to battle.net in the past, then you will want to delete the “Diablo Prefs” file from the Preferences folder, and the “Battle.net Cache” file from your Diablo folder. After deleting these files, restart Diablo, and you should be able to connect to battle.net
“I can chat with other users, but I can’t join a game.”
In order to play in a multiplayer game, your system must be able to receive packets of game data (technically, UDP packets) from other players. Some service providers don’t allow incoming data of this type, or don’t provide users with a unique Internet address to which packets can be sent. If you are unsure whether your provider is blocking this type of connection, please contact them for more information.
If you are trying to play Diablo through a computer that is directly connected to the Internet through your employer or other organization, you should be aware that some companies block certain types of incoming data to their networks. To play multiplayer games on Battle.net, you may have to ask your network administrator to allow incoming UDP packets on port 6112.
Diablo and AppleTalk
AppleTalk is the preferred protocol for a Mac only local network.
“I am looking for a game in another AppleTalk Zone, but when I hit “Create Game” it doesn’t create the game there.”
Mac Diablo allows you to search any zone that is on your AppleTalk network. However, when you create a game, that game is created in the zone that your Mac is set to in the “AppleTalk” control panel.
Diablo and IPX
Diablo uses MacIPX to communicate using IPX protocols. Many IBM compatible computers have IPX network drivers; if a PC is on a network, it most likely has IPX on it. We only recommend IPX to play Diablo between Macs and PCs on a local area network. Since the demo doesn’t support play against PC versions, we strongly recommend using AppleTalk.
Your IPX connection is set up from the MacIPX Control Panel, not from Diablo. Open the MacIPX Control Panel, and chose the icon for an Ethernet network. Double-click this icon, and make sure that the frame type is set to the frame type that your IPX network uses. Most networks use the “802.3” frame type, but please check with the network administrator to be certain. The MacIPX Control Panel only needs to be configured once.
To start a multi-player game using IPX, select “IPX Network” after you have chosen your character, then Diablo will search the network for other IPX games, and take you to the “Select Game” screen, which gives you the option to either “Create Game” or join any of the currently active games on your IPX network.
“I can’t see games created by others.” or “Others can’t see games I’ve created.”
Make certain that all computers on the network are set to the same frame type. The PC Diablo “Network.doc” file deals with setting the PC’s IPX information.
Diablo and Modems
Modems are useful to play against your friends when one party doesn’t have access to the internet.
“Mac Diablo says that it “Can’t Initialize selected device”, why not??”
Well, first check to make sure that your modem is properly connected to your computer. Then check to make sure it’s got power, and is plugged into your phone line. If all of the connections are in order, then your modem probably didn’t like the INIT string.
The INIT string is set in the Diablo “Startup Options” window, under the “Modem” tab.
We recommend trying the default INIT string “AT &F” If that fails, we recommend trying “ATZ” or
“AT &F &K1”. If all of these fail, then you will want to check your modem manual, and use an INIT string that disable error correction and data compression. It it still doesn’t work, then please contact Blizzard Technical Support, and let us know what kind of modem you are using.
Diablo and Direct Connect
The Direct Connect option is provided primarily for Mac-IBM games when there is no network present. First you will need two cables: A Mac-modem cable (MiniDin 8 male – DB 25 Male) and a PC “null-modem” cable (DB 25 Female – DB9 or DB25 Female to fit PC Com port). Plug the Mac-modem cable into the Mac, plug one end of the null-modem cable into the Mac-modem cable, and then the other end of the null-modem cable into the PC. Other than the need for a Mac-modem cable, follow the directions in the manual.
• Diablo uses digital streaming audio for the music in the game. This is processor intensive and can affect performance on slower processors, such as the PowerPC 603 family. If you want to speed up your game, go to the options, and turn music off.
• For best performance, we recommend using the startup option “Quit other Programs” when playing Diablo. This ensures that Diablo can have more of your computer’s processing power. If this does not yield sufficient results, check the “Quit Finder Also” option.
If you are having problems connecting to Battle.net, you will need to contact your network administrator and ask them to open UDP port 6112. Diablo requires that this port be open to communicate with the battle.net servers. If you use Apple Remote Access you will also want to close any ARA connections before conecting to Battle.net.
My cursor goes black on the Battle.net screens. Huh?
We noticed this behavior on certain third party video cards. We recommend contacting your video card manufacturer, and getting the latest version of drivers and BIOS, as available.
I’m running Diablo in window mode, and the colors went funky. Why?
Diablo is designed to run full screen. We don’t recommend running Diablo in window mode. We also don’t recommend trying to change the screen resolution while running Diablo in window mode
Note about RAM Doubler
During our testing of Diablo, we found that the combination of RAM Doubler and a Macintosh with only 16 MB led to problems, unless RAM Doubler was set to “File Mapping Only”. If your Macintosh has 16 MB of physical RAM we strongly recommend either using RAM Doubler’s “File Mapping Only” setting or using Apple Virtual Memory.
If you are having problems, please consult the “Troubleshooting” section before contacting Technical Support.
